The Vuelta a España Femenina got off to a pretty shambolic start in Barcelona last weekend: Riders were delayed during the first stage’s team time trial after officials took their time checking over bikes. The delay was reportedly caused initially by the fact that Movistar riders were late to present their bikes, for which they were later fined, but caused a ripple effect that meant that riders from Team Visma | Lease a Bike were late for their start time off the ramp.
Following the opening stage chaos for her team, Pauline Ferrand Prévot was forced to retire from the race ahead of stage five citing an infection in her ankle sustained at Paris Roubaix, which she won. “Since Roubaix, I couldn’t recover fully from my infection in my ankle. It’s a hard decision to let my teammates and my team, as I love being with them, but it’s the best and smartest one to be able to recover fully and be 100% ready for this summer,” she wrote on Instagram.
Meanwhile, fellow comeback queen Anna van der Breggen took her first victory since returning to the peloton on stage four of the race.
