Donβt want to be that guy but Iβm pretty sure Dygert hasnβt apologised for her racist tweets yet or shown any contrition and she clearly denies the pretty established notions of white privilege and Black trauma. The same can be said for Quinn Simmons and Gianni Moscon and Iβm not sure cycling can talk in a meaningful way about diversity when it brushes the beliefs of these people under the carpet - or while the cycling media celebrates all 3 riders and the UCI has no sanction for racism in the pro peleton. Iβm happy to be corrected but it seems like racism is sort of the new omertΓ - which in a sport as white as cycling is no surprise I guess. On a more positive note - glad you were so effusive about British Nats. I took my (much ) better half to Saltburn- got a great viewing location and weβre just gripped by the womenβs race- and Pffeifer - yes - but Flora Perkins !! And a World/ Pro Tour break of 7 at British Nats. Also YES Shirrin and re pregnant riders/ riders with kids. Think the issue here was teams not paying mat leave. No shortage of women - Teachers, Bankers, Scientists, Builders, Drivers, Shop workers etc whoβve had kids and gone back to work. With support , Science and May leave the obstacles - both real and imagined ( all pretty much rooted in sexism) weβre taken away. Hope you have a good Tour and Giro Donne.
None of them have shown any remorse, you're right. It is a tricky situation for reporters, though, when riders like that are prominent. There's only so many times you can address their actions but without something meaningful coming from the rider themselves it can't be put to bed properly. In saying that it's our job to report on what's happening in the race and if those riders are there we can't just ignore that they exist or are part of the race. But those with power in the sport at a governance level, as well as teams, absolutely need to do more. If not then there is no deterrent for this kind of behaviour which just opens it up for more.
Glad you had a lovely time at British nats! It looked like a great race to watch. Hope you're enjoying the Giro :)
This Giro Donne might be a good fit for Marianne Vos π me just happy to be able to watch some exciting womenβs races ππ
