It was all go from Glasgow to Glentress

Hello lovely subscribers and welcome to Women’s Cycling Weekly! 🚴‍♀️

Apologies for not dropping into your inboxes on Friday, I was in the middle of a bit of a crazy weekend at the MTB world champs in Glentress and then I thought it made sense to wait until the road race was done before sending out the newsy 🤷‍♀️!

And what a race it was. On a marmite course in the middle of Glasgow with punchy climbs and 40000 twists and turns it had Lotte Kopecky’s name all over it. With two rainbow jerseys in the bag from the track with the points and elimination races straight off the back of her TDFF GC podium (and 6th up the Tourmalet!!) she looked destined for the rainbow jersey. Still, others gave it a crack including defending champ Annemiek van Vleuten in her final crack at worlds, Cecilie Uttrup Luwdig on her best ride all season, the omnipresent Demi Vollering and — to my personal delight — Lizzie Deignan. Lotte in rainbows just makes sense, though, and the Belgian federation had better get ready to start printing more licenses asap! 🤩

Away from the road one of my highlights was seeing the Kiwi sweep of the DH junior podium (they must be doing something right development-wise over there!), as well as seeing Pauline Ferrand-Prevot do the double-double (two XC titles two years in a row) 🥇🥇🌈.

I don’t know about you guys but I have mixed feelings about the ‘super worlds’ concept. On the one hand, it made it a bit of a logistical nightmare for those who wanted to race — and spectate — across multiple disciplines (although Blanka Vas pulled it off!) On the other hand, one thing I really enjoyed was the way that the track events incorporated para athletes into the usual programme meaning that we got to know them a lot better and they got more limelight than when it’s a separate event.

On a personal level it meant that I couldn’t get to the women’s RR or ITT because I was on the other side of Scotland for the XC, and, on the subject of MTB, it split up DH and XC across two weekends and a three hour drive. In terms of watching from home it was great, but for IRL not so much.
